Retakes, No-Shows, and Missed Deadlines

A licensee who does not pass can retake the assessment, and there is no limit unless your board sets one. A missed appointment is not scored and does not count as a failure. Both situations are handled between EBAS and the licensee, and neither needs board action unless the completion window is at risk.

What a not-passing score means

An assessment measures how a licensee reasoned through one scenario at one sitting, so a not-passing score means the reasoning did not meet the standard on that scenario. The report shows section-level detail, so your board can see where it fell short. EBAS does not recommend what the board should do next.

For how to read the report itself, see How to Read a Score Report.

How retakes work

EBAS does not cap attempts. Each retake uses a new scenario from the same category and goes to different graders, and the standard does not move between attempts. The $400 fee applies each time and is paid by the licensee.

Most licensees who do not pass on the first attempt pass within two or three. Failing more than three times is uncommon.

If your board prefers a defined endpoint, two steps make that work: write the limit into the order, and tell EBAS. Attempt limits are board-specific and EBAS does not track them automatically.

What a licensee can learn between attempts

Boards reasonably ask whether a licensee who can retake the assessment will find out where they went wrong and correct for it next time.

A licensee can learn two things between attempts. The standard is already public in the rubric, and the report shows which sections fell short. The scenario itself changes on every attempt, so there is no specific case to rehearse. Improvement across attempts is also information your board can read. A licensee who passes on the third attempt met the standard on a scenario they had not seen before, and a licensee who does not pass after several attempts has produced a pattern that the section detail will show.

No-shows

A missed appointment is not scored. EBAS retains the testing center fee for the missed appointment and refunds or applies the remainder toward a new one, and the licensee reschedules through EBAS.

A licensee who knows in advance should reschedule. Rescheduling or canceling five to 29 days out carries a $50 fee per essay.

Your board does not need to act on a no-show unless it puts the licensee outside the completion window.

Partial completion on multi-category orders

Licensees commonly pass some categories and retake others, and categories already passed do not have to be retaken. An order with five categories can end with four passes and one category the licensee keeps retaking, and the section detail on that category shows where the reasoning falls short.

Missed deadlines

Completion inside the window is a compliance matter for your board. EBAS administers, scores, and reports, and does not enforce the order. Boards wanting a status check on a specific licensee can contact EBAS at any point at admin@ebas.org or 888-676-3227.

Reading a pattern across attempts

A score report review is a short call with the EBAS team to look at more than one report side by side and work out what a repeated failure in the same section is showing.
